Expanding the bicycle value chain since 2008.
The most efficient mode of transport in the world, the bicycle is the most ecologically and fiscally sustainable vehicle ever created. It can provide freedom, mobility and positive change in the lives of people around the world. At Mike's Bikes, we believe in the power of the bicycle.
Based on this belief, we have undertaken projects that put bicycles directly into the hands of people in developing countries. So far we've shipped over 33,338 bikes to 8 African countries. The changes the bicycles make in their communities and in the lives of the new owners is profound.
The up-cycling value chain creates direct and indirect employment opportunities. Sales and servicing of bicycles, parts and equipment are the main sources of income at each workshop. Many of these shops have become hubs and drivers of local cycling culture.
Each location and story is unique. Whether it’s the emergence of competitive road cycling in Sierra Leone, the informal bike dealer network in Zimbabwe, or pump track riding in Lesotho, our projects increase the quality of life for thousands of riders and their communities.
The approach of the Mike's Bikes Foundation is different from the utilitarian development model of typical bicycle charities. We believe that the adoption of cycling in any location is driven predominantly by cultural factors. Local stakeholders in each location are key influencers, and help their communities discover the power of the bicycle.
Bicycles connect - at home and afar - and we’d like to invite you along on this journey.
